Ukraine War’s Implications for the Security of Europe: Korea-Romania Cooperation

On October 24, 2024, the Romanian Diplomatic Institute (RDI) co-organized, together with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, an event titled “Ukraine War’s Implications for the Security of Europe: Korea-Romania Cooperation,” during which Ambassador Joohyeon BAIK delivered a lecture.

The presidium was composed of:

  • H.E. Dr. Joohyeon Baik, former Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Kazakhstan, Emeritus Professor at the Korea National Diplomatic Academy, and former Consul General in Houston, as a special guest.
  • H.E. Rim Kap-soo, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Romania.
  • Prof. Liliana Popescu-Bîrlan, Director General, RDI.
  • Mr. George Vișan, Black Sea Region expert, RDI Expertise Service.

Among the topics discussed were issues related to security in the Black Sea area stemming from Russia’s war against Ukraine, the relations between Russia and NATO, and how they have been influenced by the “Partnership for Peace,” security issues in Southeast Asia, and the development of an epistemic community between Romania and the Republic of Korea. The conference contributed to strengthening the bilateral relations between Romania and South Korea, emphasizing the importance of cooperation in the fields of security and economic collaboration. The discussions highlighted the exiting opportunities for both countries to enhance their strategic partnership, addressing regional and global challenges, including those related to European security in the context of the conflict in Ukraine.
