The visit of a delegation from the Kingdom of Thailand to the Romanian Diplomatic Institute

A delegation of 35 members, led by the Deputy Secretary General of the King Prajadhipok Institute of the Kingdom of Thailand, visited the headquarters of the Romanian Diplomatic Institute (IDR). The delegation included numerous Thai mayors, highlighting the diversity and significance of the participants.

This important visit underscores Romania’s position as a strategic partner with significant potential to facilitate and support collaboration, thus bridging Eastern and Western regions.

The presentation delivered by the general director of IDR, Ms. Liliana Popescu, focused on the Institute’s activities and the shared interests in providing expertise, including in the field of leadership.

  • The discussion also addressed foreign policy connections between Romania and Thailand, emphasizing the following key points:
  • Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM): the primary multilateral platform for dialogue and cooperation linking Europe and Asia. ASEM partners account for approximately 65% of global GDP, 60% of the global population, 75% of global tourism and 68% of global trade.
  • EU Indo-Pacific Strategy: an essential framework adopted in 2021, which Romania can leverage in its relations with Asian states. Romania has the opportunity to engage more actively in promoting this strategy, particularly in areas such as economic resilience and connectivity.
  • Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD): Romania is in the process of accession, while Thailand recently received approval to begin a similar endeavor.
  • Both Thailand (2024) and Romania (2021) have been recipients of the UN Public Service Innovation Award, recognizing their efforts in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
