On November 21, 2024, the Romanian Diplomatic Institute hosted an event marking the launch of the latest issue of the “România Occidentală” journal, a special edition dedicated to the 75th anniversary of NATO’s founding and the 20th anniversary of Romania’s accession to the Alliance.
The event was opened by Her Excellency Luminița Odobescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs, who emphasized Romania’s steadfast commitment to NATO’s values and objectives, as well as the country’s significant contributions to the Alliance’s missions over the past two decades. Romania also reaffirmed its firm stance in supporting Ukraine in its fight for independence and sovereignty.
Following this, Dr. Liliana Popescu-Bîrlan, Director General of the Romanian Diplomatic Institute, presented the new issue of the institute’s journal, România Occidentală, highlighting the growing strategic importance of the Black Sea region in light of evolving geopolitical challenges.
The event featured valuable contributions from Major General Gabriel Anghel, Military Advisor to the Minister of Defense, Mr. Angel Tîlvăr, and Mr. George Vișan, Advisor at the Romanian Diplomatic Institute and Editor-in-Chief of this special NATO-focused edition.
In the second part of the event, a debate titled “Romania as a NATO Ally” took place, featuring key speakers Dr. Luciana Ghica, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Political Science, University of Bucharest, and Dr. Alexandru Lucinescu, Senior Researcher at the Institute for Political Studies of Defense and Military History (ISPAIM).
The event was attended by numerous ambassadors accredited in Bucharest, diplomats, researchers, and students. We extend our gratitude to all those who contributed to the creation of the “România Occidentală” journal, as well as to the attendees, for their support and engagement.
