Abstract

This article examines Graham Allison's book Destined for War: Can America and China Escape Thucydides’s Trap?, where the author draws compelling lessons from the history of strategic competition between dominant global powers and emerging ones. Allison analyzes whether the ongoing competition between the United States and China could lead to war and warns decision-makers of the dangers posed when an emerging power challenges an established one.  Additionally, the article addresses key themes from the book, such as the dramatic economic rise of China, China's defense policies, the role of the US in past power shifts and vulnerabilities in US strategies against China's growing influence. Lastly, this paper examines Allison's recommendations for avoiding a possible war between the US and China.
