Abstract

This article explores the reignited interest in the post-Soviet space, spurring a surge in analyses and publications about Russia and Putin, competing with works focused on Ukraine and Zelensky. In this context, Rüdiger von Fritsch’s books, The Road to Russia: Ambassador in Moscow (2021) and A Turning Point: Putin’s War and Its Consequences (2022), stand out as balanced and comprehensive studies on Russia, Ukraine, and Eastern Europe. After Von Fritsch’s role as former vice-president of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service, his diplomatic career saw him stationed in Moscow from 2014, during the Crimean annexation, offering a unique insight into Russia’s evolving political paradigm. Thus, this article aims to show the distinctive perspective of Von Fritsch’s books to understand the complexities of Russia and Ukraine, including tensions over Ukraine, the resuscitation of the USSR and the geopolitical ramifications of Putin’s authoritarian agenda, as well as insights into the future of Russia’s relations with Europe, the US and China.
