This article provides a comprehensive assessment of what we know and what we should understand about the Russian army’s cyber operations in the context of the war in Ukraine. This article must be read as an isolated case study and a real-time expert opinion on the role of cybernetic operations in a military conflict. It starts from the assumption that this war is the first armed conflict largely based on defensive and offensive cyber operations. The main arguments of the study confirm that cybernetic operations are an essential part of modern warfare, but that they function optimally when integrated into a strategy together with kinetic operations. Finally, there are several angles and conceptual frameworks for understanding cybernetic operations: as a cybernetic security tool, as an instrument of warfare and as a component of the propaganda machine of Moscow-style autocratic regimes.
