The article examines Dimitrie C. Penescu’s final diplomatic posting as Romania’s Minister Plenipotentiary to the Nordic countries (1928-1929), accredited in Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen, and Helsinki. Building on Romania’s evolving diplomatic network in the region established during WWI, Penescu’s mission aimed to cultivate a favorable image of Romania, intensify trade, and counteract Hungarian propaganda. Despite his short one-year tenure due to financial reasons, Penescu engaged with local officials and press, and notably facilitated the establishment of the Swedish-Romanian Society to foster bilateral understanding. His tenure highlights the challenges and priorities of Romanian diplomacy in the Nordic region during the interwar period.
